U12 Division 1
The U12 Maroon team traveled to Winchester this weekend, returning home with all three points after a resilient team performance. On a difficult pitch surface that made fluent passing a challenge, the girls showed great adaptability to overcome a scrappy start and take control of the contest.
The first half was a tactical battle as both sides adjusted to the heavy ground. While rhythm was hard to find early on, the girls eventually settled into their stride. The central players began linking effectively with the wide areas, stretching the opposition and creating a flurry of chances.
The breakthrough finally came in the dying seconds of the half. A brilliant solo run from the halfway line carved through the Winchester defence, ending with a calm, composed finish to give the girls a 1–0 lead at the break.
The momentum stayed with the girls in the second half. The lead was soon doubled following a display of sheer persistence: after winning a tough tackle on the corner of the box, a clinical piece of footwork opened up space for a powerful "rocket" of a shot that flew past the keeper.
While the girls dominated large periods of play and even had a goal disallowed for a marginal offside, the closing stages became tense. A lapse in defensive concentration allowed the hosts to pull one back, serving as a reminder of the importance of maintaining focus for the full 60 minutes. However, the squad held firm to ensure a well-deserved victory.
While the narrow finish was a frustration for a team that rarely looks outplayed, the overall performance was full of talent and grit. The focus moving forward will be on sustained concentration and clinical finishing to reflect the team's dominance on the scoreboard.
A huge well done to Megan for an outstanding all-round display and her player of the match award. Beyond scoring a vital goal, Megan’s set-piece delivery was a constant threat, creating numerous openings for her teammates. Just as importantly, her work rate was exemplary, tirelessly tracking back to support the defensive line whenever called upon. Great work, Megan!
