Jock McClorey Tournament U9
It was a tough day at the office for the girls, who fell to a narrow defeat against Worthys Youth Blues in a closely contested match. Despite dominating large periods of possession and creating numerous chances, the young team was ultimately undone by two long-range efforts and a late counter-attack.
The girls started the game with confidence, and it didn't take long for them to get on the scoresheet. Matilda found the back of the net early on, giving her side a deserved lead. The team continued to control the ball, but Worthys proved to be a difficult opponent, swarming the ball and making it hard for the team to play their usual fluid football.
Against the run of play, Worthys found an equaliser with a well-struck long-range shot. Our young players didn't let their heads drop, and they continued to press forward, creating several opportunities. However, they were met by a standout performance from the opposition's goalkeeper, who made a number of impressive saves to keep the score level.
Worthys then took the lead with another long-range effort, catching us out. The setback seemed to spur the team on, and they responded with some excellent passing football. This attacking push paid off when Sienna scored to bring the game level.
The final quarter saw the team throw everything they had at the Worthys goal. They had multiple shots saved, were denied by the crossbar and the post, and even earned nine corners, but they couldn't find that crucial third goal. In the end, a moment of misfortune sealed their fate. While pushing for the winner, they lost possession, and Worthys capitalised with a swift counter-attack to score the decisive goal and win the match.
While the result was disappointing, the girls can be proud of their determination and the quality of their passing game, which was on full display throughout the match.
